OMK Weekend 2026

What a weekend we had!

It all started on Friday night with the OMK Cricket in glorious sunshine.  The 1st XI batted first and posted a massive 217, thanks to a fabulous century from Year 13 pupil Ayan.  In reply, the OMK team were always up against it in the chase, with the 1st XI picking up regular wickets throughout the innings. The OMKs took their defeat in style and everyone enjoyed a BBQ and much comraderie afterward.

We were blessed with the weather again in the morning and the golfers met up at Tavistock Golf Club for the annual tournament there. Thank you so much for OMK David Anthony's organisation once again and to Hugh Walkington who helped on the day. It was fantastic to have OMKs Mike Roe (Captain of Tavistock Golf Club) and Jeremy Horn (President of Royal North Devon Golf Club) both present.
It was a great day by all accounts, despite being down two players, and was once again dominated by the ladies!

Team prize:  Nicola Ormond, Ruth Horn and Liz Wilson-Smith
Member individual winner:  Liz Wilson-Smith
Visitor individual winner:  Ruth Horn
Nearest the flag   Ruth Horn (beating Jeremy, her husband!)

Meanwhile back at school, groups from different decades gathered to re-visit their old haunts.  The classes of 1996 and 2001 were particularly well represented and they certainly made the most of being together again!  After tea and tours, we gathered in Chapel for a short service led by Reverend Matt Godfrey.  The congregation raised the roof in song, which was wonderful to hear. We also paused to remember those we lost in the last year:

Mount House

Charles Dewhurst (1953-1959)

Alastair McCure (1982-1987)

Kelly College

Nicholas Bomford (1952-1957)

Marinal DeStacpoole (1993-1996)

Jon Guthrie (1990-1994)

Nadir Mohamed (1969-1971)

Julian Moore (1959-1963)

Mike Westbrook (1949-1953)

Peter Williams (Former Staff, 1970-1998)

Adam Wiltshire (1976-1979)

Roy Yoong (1975-1981)

After Chapel, we all went off to put our gladrags on and re-convened outside of Tavy House at the Prep for drinks. With some of the best views in Tavistock and old friends gathering in their finery, it felt like a very special occasion indeed.  We were treated to a fabulous three course meal cooked by the MK team inside and over coffee we heard from our truly inspirational guest speaker, OMK Lewis Pugh (1978-1980).

Lewis has led an incredible life as an endurance swimmer and ocean advocate.  Such has been his commitment to justice and passion for the oceans that in 2013, he was appointed as the UN Patron of the Oceans. He has spent four decades undertaking swims in some of the world’s most challenging and vulnerable places to campaign for their protection.  He was the first person to undertake a long-distance swim in every ocean of the world. He pioneered the first swim across the North Pole, the first swim along the length of the English Channel, the world’s highest swim and even a swim under the Antarctic ice sheet. Last year, Lewis swam around the island of Martha’s Vineyard, on the 50th anniversary of Jaws, to highlight the urgent need to protect sharks. He was also recognised by National Geographic as one of 33 changemakers and hearing him, we could all understand why.

It was a wonderful weekend all round and we can't wait to do it again!  Look out for information about the 150th celebrations coming soon!!
